What is the Internet?

In a world that revolves around the digital world, there is an incomprehensible amount of people that lack the understanding of what exactly the internet is. It is a tool that many will use for hours a day, amounting to months throughout their life (projection for the younger generation). I personally would not objectify the internet but treat it as a collection of various data sources. Like a giant map.

I have come across this image numerous times, or images of similar context, throughout my many years of surfing the internet. This is a visual representation of the sheer size of the collection of data within the internet. Everything a single person has ever seen on the web will only ever amount to .0001% of all the contents. One thing that scares me about the internet is the Data storage and transfer capabilities. The amount of information a single person can obtain simply by googling and searching about someone for an hour is enough to do damage with the wrong intentions in mind. This problem correlates to others not knowing the power the internet has and the things individuals can do with simple manipulation of computers and algorithms.
